Cloud Computing & Software Development, with Dr. Timothy Chou & Vince Vasquez

Dr. Timothy Chou joins us to talk about his recently released trilogy on cloud computing for this week’s episode of “The Innovation Engine” podcast. We talk with Dr. Chou about how cloud computing is enabling an innovative new breed of software applications, how it’s changing the software development world in general, and why it’s important for anyone to understand that “service is the delivery of information that’s personal and relevant to you.

Dr. Timothy Chou is an author, cloud computing expert, and lecturer at Stanford University. Between 1999 and 2005, Dr. Chou served as President of Oracle On Demand, the fastest-growing business inside Oracle during that time. He currently serves on the board of two application cloud service companies, Burstorm and Cloudbook, which is the publisher of his series on cloud computing. Dr. Chou is also the author of The End of Software: Transforming Your Business for the On Demand Future.

This is Dr. Chou’s second appearance on the podcast. He was previously a guest on the 24th episode of the podcast in July of last year. For this second appearance, he is joined by Vince Vasquez. Vince is the founder of Cloudbook, the publisher of Dr. Chou’s trilogy. Vince has more than 25 years of experience, having worked for companies including Sun, HP, and Cray Research.

Here are some highlights from the podcast recording with Dr. Chou and Vince Vasquez:

  • We open the podcast by getting a little background from Dr. Chou on what the 3 books cover
  • Vince talks about the format of Cloudbooks, which include standard copy, videos that include presentation slides of the content covered in each chapter, and access to the presentation slides themselves
  • We talk about an interesting stat from 2013 that Dr. Chou cites in the book: the first million code repositories on Github were created in less than four years, and the last million took only 48 days.
  • We ask Dr. Chou what he means by “Performance is a Feature”
