Are you a publisher who is interested in making relevant news available to a localized audience? How often do you find yourself using Twitter for news rather than trusted sources? With the majority of news consumption turning toward digital media, the amount of information available is exponentially increasing. Editors with limited manpower must pick the right news to pursue, but manually filtering out all of the new information to find the worthwhile stories is next to impossible.
We’ve created a solution called Editor’s Compass that is building off of the current foundation in the larger digital media news industry. Recently, the Google News Lab launched a major update of Google Trends, which is indicative of this shift in the industry. However, we believe that there’s more to news than simply trending topics.
Our idea is to have data streams for as many different digital media as possible, social media to RSS feeds, funnel into a single autonomous system. Most of these media are already publicly available, so our system would work with this content to filter and prioritize the information to make it easier for editors to discover the biggest storyline. They system would learn the preferences of the editors and adapt the content that is filtered through to them, meaning that the system goes beyond trending topic news to actual catered and personalized content. The system would also do preliminary checks on the authenticity of the reported news, so as to avoid reporting on false leads.
Below is a demonstration of the Editor’s Compass prototype, created by the 3Pillar Global Advanced Technology Group (ATG):
